Transcaspian Urial Information

Native Habitat: The Transcaspian Urial sheep are native to Turkmenistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. They thrive in arid, semi desertist, rocky regions, so the Texas terrain suits them perfectly. Surviving in foothills and mountainous terrain, these sheep proved to be a challenging and wary prey.
Physical Characteristics: Transcaspian Urial rams weigh between 120 and 200 lb. The ewes are smaller and lighter, weighing in at between 80 and 110 lbs. Standing at about 36 in at the shoulder, they have a reddish brown or light tan coat. Their bellies and legs tend to be lighter in color and mature males develop a white bib and neck ruff which becomes especially apparent during the rut. Their large spiraling curling horns sweep out and back, growing up to 40 plus inches. As impressive trophies, these horns are deeply ridged and are perfect for mounting.
Diet: Transcaspian Urial Sheep are herbivores. Just as with most sheep species, they graze and eat a mix of grasses, shrubs, leaves, and herbs. They are adapted to arid environments where food and water is limited. Thus, they survive on very little and thrive in managed ranches like that of Cotton Mesa. Our breeding populations are healthy and thriving, aided by adequate amounts of food and water.
Reproduction: Their rut usually occurs in October to December and results in a 5-month gestation period typically birthing one lamb or perhaps twins.
