How Does the Whitetail Deer Scoring Work?

Ultimately, Whitetail deer receive a trophy score by measuring their antlers. There are five areas that are measured to determine this standardized trophy deer score.

• Main Beam Length – this is where the length of each antler beam is measured from base to tip 
• Inside Spread – next, the widest point between the main beams is identified and measured 
• Tine Length (points) – the points of the antlers are known as the times, and each time is individually measured and labeled as G1, G2, G3, G4, and more
• Mass (circumference) – next, a measurement is taken per side which measures the circumference of the four main masses
• Symmetry or Abnormal Points – this will depend on if the deer is typical or non-typical. Typical deer will receive symmetry measure while non-typical will receive a report on the abnormal or asymmetrical aspects of the antlers 

A standardized calculation of the score of any trophy deer will take into account the combination of the beam length, tines, mass, and spread. Most commonly, the aspects of mass and additional points will dictate the score more than simply the spread, especially in the larger antlers ranges. 

Is There More Than One Deer Scoring System?

A short answer to that question is yes. There are two scoring systems that are utilized in trophy Whitetail deer scoring.

Boone & Crockett (B&C) Whitetail Deer Scoring Guide

The Boone & Crockett scoring system usually is utilized for free range deer in the wild. This scoring system is not typically utilized at hunting ranches or any other area where game are cultivated for hunting. This system is used mainly for record book entries. It is important to note that the Boone & Crockett scoring guide will penalize asymmetry on typical racks.

Safari Club International Trophy Whitetail Deer Scoring Guide

The SCI trophy whitetail deer scoring system is more commonly utilized at hunting ranches, high fence hunting ranches, managed hunting lands, and other private hunting arenas where Whitetail populations may have been genetically enhanced. Here, the total antler inches, including non-typical points, will receive points, as opposed to the Boone & Crockett scoring guide, which only provides points for typical racks without asymmetry.
